At 16:52 on a Friday the control room running Britain's electricity was holding enough spare power to survive losing its single biggest generator. Eighty-three seconds later it had lost nearly twice that, and 1,152,878 customers had been cut off deliberately. About 500 megawatts of the shortfall came from generators nobody had dispatched, switching themselves off to stay safe.
