On 1 October 1946 the tribunal at Nuremberg sentenced twelve of the leaders of Nazi Germany to death and acquitted three. Its central charge, waging aggressive war, had never been tried in a court before, and the defence said so. The tribunal's answer was shaky law. The care with which it conducted the trial is why the principles survived anyway.

Nearly a quarter of the adult European women in New Zealand signed a petition in 1893, and the clerks unrolled it down the floor of the debating chamber. The Premier then tried to buy a vote against it in the upper house, and the manoeuvre so disgusted two other councillors that they switched sides. It passed by twenty to eighteen.

New London took Susette Kelo's house and gave the land to a developer, and in 2005 the Supreme Court said it could. The plan promised 3,169 jobs. Pfizer, whose arrival the whole thing was built around, closed its New London site in 2010. Seventy eight million dollars of public money later, the neighbourhood was an empty field.

Ten Presidents in a row have taken the oath on 25 July, and the date holds for a dull reason: nothing has gone wrong. The office is usually described as ceremonial, which is roughly true and completely useless, because everything interesting about it happens in the gaps the Constitution left open on purpose. In November 2025 the Supreme Court spent 111 pages on exactly those gaps.

Meanwhile the country he was describing had a date chosen to suit a foreign war anniversary, a border that had been drawn and then locked away, no republic for another two and a half years, and the one man most associated with the whole thing sitting at the other end of the country, spinning thread.

The decade is supposed to have gone to the right while the left did all the talking. The record is more awkward than that. In 2024, the biggest election year in history, every one of the ten major countries tracked by the ParlGov project punished its governing party at the ballot box, left and right alike, for the first time in about 120 years of records. Something real is happening on the right, but it is not what the timeline says it is, and the reason a timeline is such a poor guide turns out to be measurable.

In his thirty-second year on the throne, Ramesses III of Egypt was murdered by his own household, in a plot his own trial records describe in almost bureaucratic detail. It is one of the oldest fully documented political conspiracies on record, and it reads uncomfortably like this morning's news. Sumer, Greece, Rome and India each produced their own version of the same behaviour, with no contact between most of them, and long before any of them, a zoo full of chimpanzees in the Netherlands did too. This is the case that politics was never invented once. It was discovered, independently, everywhere humans formed a group large enough to need a leader.
